What does 'RELEASE DATE' mean?

Yesterday while visiting my friend I had listened (in MP3) a new album of a very famous group. However the release date (Allmusic.com, Rockdetector.com) is September 5. There is no such CD in the stocks (Amazon).

I bet he was listening to the new Audioslave album, right ?
Release date is when the album is being sold in the stores. However the discs are pressed and ready for distribution several weeks before the 'release date'. An insider comes, ripps the cd, uploads it as torrent somewhere and everyone can listen to it...

Btw. their previous albums were better. It seems that Morello already tried everything on his guitar, so his new attempts are a bit pointless

No, it was Iron Maiden (I even saw the photo of the CD). So it's illegal. I thoght this can happen due different release days in Japan, Europe and USA.

That album will be released the 28th August in Europe. If he had a physical copy it could have been a pre-order, what bands sometimes provide for harcore fans.
It is also possible, that he has a friend in a music shop who sold him a legal copy (because the release date will be on monday it is likely that the stocks were shipped already of friday). Or a certain shop wanted to hurry up and started to sell the albums earlier...
