* - This is just for Sony Media applications, such as: Vegas, Vegas+DVD, DVD Architect, Vegas Movie Studio, Vegas Movie Studio+DVD, DVD Architect Studio, ACID, Music Studio, ACIDized, Super Duper Music Looper, Jam Trax, Sony Sound Series, Chopper, Groove Mapping, Groove Cloning, CD Architect, Sound Forge, Audio Studio, Acoustic Mirror, Noise Reduction, Wave 64, Wave Hammer, XFX and more.

Expect a pretty listless response from this crowd.  ATRAC ceased to be relevant long ago, I don't know why sony even bothers.

Even Sony seems to be giving up on ATRAC by supporting AAC on some of their recent MP3 players.

It seems to me ATRAC made it possible for Sony to have a unique DRM format so they could join it with music sales. To improve the quality they had to release new encoders that supported rediculously high bitrates, which made no sense considering modern lossy codecs like Ogg and iTunes AAC and even LAME MP3 are very close to transparent around 160 Kbps VBR.

Yea, ATRAC is pretty much irrelevant. I have a sony MP3 player unfortunatly and they pretty much try to shove ATRAC down your throat... They give you crap software that only supported ATRAC (they made it support MP3 a couple months ago) and if you dont want ATRAC, you have to use some other program that is hard to find.
And if you believe theres not a chance to die...

ah well, hydrogenaudio is not what i once thought it was.  kurisu made a great find not only for the users of md, but basically for anyone.  who cares if you think it is rubbish and are certain that 160kpbs ogg file is pristine, isn't hydrogenaudio about discussing digital compression, improvements etc?  or am i sorry, is it all only about ogg and lame?  anything outside that realm is useless?

then give up the ghost on lossless files that are not being widely used in fact used less than atrac is.  and while you are at it, shut this site down because basically some or all of these filetpyes will be eventually extinct.  personally, we are all better off with a shoe string tied to aluminium can and that to a phonograph.

Atrac is still relevant to me, since it is the only format available for gapless playback on Sony devices out of the box (not having to resort to rockbox).

I'm interested in progress, I don't see ATRAC as progress.

If people are not interested it's probably because:
1/ atrac doesn't offer anything better than AAC, Vorbis, MP3, MPC (lower quality, poor compatibility, closed source and specifications, prisonner of bloated and buggy (SonicStage) softwares.
2/ because this plug-in is only for Sony's software which are also not very popular on this board.

So what do you expect? 16 pages of enthousiast replies in 24 hours for an encoder that 12 users at best are using on this board? Nobody forbidds you nor anyone to discuss about atrac, vqf or plusV. If LAME, Vorbis and AAC are by far more popular than atrac, then blame Sony for it's special politic about proprietary formats, forced DRM, etc... Atrac family is not interesting for most HA.org people needs. Moreover, they start to offer in 2006 what we all have with other formats for years (i.e. compatibility with different softwares: wow!)... I guess that the next revolutionnary idea of Sony would be to offer an atrac3 masstagger... in 2009

The once closed doors of ATRAC are slowly opening, guru. As I said before, a SDK will be dropping soon.

Furthermore, have you used Sonicstage 4.0? It's no fb2k, but you'd be very surprised how far Sony has come with that software.

Thanks kurisu.  I wish there were more information about ATRAC 4.0 / ATRAC R/ ATRAC3 / ATRAC3plus and ATRAC advanced lossless at hydrogen.  I hope the silliness (to put in kindly) in this thread won't keep you from contributing in the future.  I would be very appreciative.

My main CODEC is MP3 (for compatability reasons), but my favorite CODEC is the ATRAC family.  I would use ATRAC all day and all night if it had cross-compatability.  Is ATRAC not where the whole idea of transparent lossy CODECs came from?  My whole LP collection is in ATRAC 4.0 and ATRAC R, pretty darn transparent, recorded for my immense enjoyment before CD-Rs and MP3s were even a viable option for home recording.  Now that Sony (who did indeed have the BIG IDEA right but dropped the ball mega-big-time and is richly deserving of criticism) is loosening up a little maybe things will get better for ATRAC.
