Why ALBUM ARTIST tag instead of COMPILATION tag?

Why ALBUM ARTIST tag instead of COMPILATION tag?

Is the COMPILAITON tag just supposed to be a switch?

Another thing I don’t understand is that if ALBUM ARTIST is only far VA why is it remapped to include: ARTIST COMPOSER PERFORMER,
Forcing the use of $meta(album artist) instead of %album artist% (when specifically you only want ALBUM ARTIST)?

This seems awkward to me.

1. because its already in widespread use, so no need to reinvent the wheel just because of a name
2. VA != compilation
3. because it can be used for stuff like split-singles/EPs as well (actually, its "correct" name should be "SET ARTIST" - but since ID3 uses ALBUM instead of SET, it makes sense to follow the already existing naming-convention)
I am arrogant and I can afford it because I deliver.

might as well ask in here, in a well trodden topic:

composer and performer tags are pretty straightforward, used for just that, and its to your discretion if you wish to include multiple tags and so forth...

... what about ensemble as opposed to band?

Also, if a prominent artist either remixed or produced a song, yet isnt part of the group, nor perform or compose the track, what would be appropriate tags to add so that the artist in question can be sorted by all works? are PRODUCER and MIXER used often/at all?

Prodoc has recently created a Wiki page about mapping of frames in ID3v2 to field names in foobar2000, and I have added some information based on the ID3v2 code. I would recommend that you take a look, if you consider using your tagging scheme with MP3 files. You can find it here: ID3 Tag Mapping.

I always assumed that the 'album artist' tag was mapped to the id3-frame representing the band-tag. Apparantly this is incorrect, so what is the relationship between 'album artist' and 'band' ?

different implementations of the same thing, as discussed in this thread and that thread. Apparently "album artist" is a tag field that's largely specific to foobar2000 while WMP (and iTunes 7) uses "BAND" for similar function.
