The significance of 10/25/1990

It could be because I was only 5 years old at the time and don't remember, but what is the significance of 10/25/1990 for compact discs? Amazon and many other web sites list that nearly all older CDs were released on that day. It must have been really busy in the record stores that day! Looking back at that date on a calendar, that would have fallen on a Thursday. New releases are usually always released on Tuesdays. What exactly occured on this date in the compact disc world?

I don't know the answer, but according to Wikipedia:

Quote
The Compact Disc reached the market in late 1982 in Asia and early the following year in other markets. This event is often seen as the "Big Bang" of the digital audio revolution.

A quick Google search for "October 25, 1990" gives a bunch of results from Amazon or places that pull their info from it, so that didn't help much.

Just a guess but is that possibly the day that Amazon started building a database?

I would check other sources than amazon (or sources witch take amazon as source). Maybe look at an old CD you own and compare the date. I to believe that it's just an 'amazon-special'

edit: uhm, are those released by the same recording company?

My guess would be at best that it had something to do with the recording industry. What exactly that was, beats me?

Although Compact Discs were invented in 1982, CD players were not widely available until October 25th 1990.  Naturally, a lot of CD releases were "saved up" for this date.

I purchased my first CD player (a Technics) in October of 1985 and it came with 5 CD's (I remember,  Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was one of them).  The first CD I purchased from the store was Boston "Boston" for $27.  There were only about 50 to choose from and half of those were classical.

FWIW I had a CD player in 1984 and the shops had hardly any CD's to select from.  Tower Records added rack after rack as the CD's became available.  The date 10/25/1990 is a date in a field in a record which is proprietary to the company you found it in, Amazon.  Who knows its significance?  To assume that an explosion of CD player ownership occurred on that day is naive.

There were plenty of CD players out there prior to that date.
