Most notable for me:

- The Media Library is completely modular now. You can remove ANY part it.
- You can now choose if you want to write unicode tags or standard ones (for compatibility for some hardware players).

Actually, from this release I think it's quite good. When I select "Allow multiple instances", it always reopens fast (although you never want multiple instances). I use "Lite" setup, and add just media lib, ogg, and mp4 playback. Also 3rd party flac, wavpack, ac3 and cue_player plugins + wa5_classified skin...

Yeah because, you know, I've often sat staring at foobar2000 and thought "Man, could I use some game cheats and tips right now! Also, please serve me up some ads... hmm... I wonder if there is a vis that will show me ads AND eye candy at the same time. Wow, better buy something!"

There's more details available via the 5.22 Released thread on the Winamp Forums, including an extensive "Undocumented" section, and a couple of updated files (ml_playlists.dll and ml_pmp.dll) which fix a couple of known bugs.

@ jmartis

Hmmm... which bug would that be then? Freeze on re-open? I don't think it's ever been reported and/or reproduced. Could you please provide more detailed info and post it in the Winamp Bug Reports forum?

Of course, the beauty of 'modular' is that there's nothing to stop you from unchecking Online Services etc in the installer options, or just deleting ml_online.dll - problem solved, heh.

DJ-Egg,

This is a great release in my opinion. Any idea when they will have native FLAC playback support built-in to Winamp? I know it has been reported on the "to-do" list for a while. I have many listeners that want to play back FLAC files from my web site (I am a music publisher/artist), but they don't know how to find/install a FLAC playback plug-in (computer novices mostly).

Any chance of having FLAC playback support included with Winamp (using Michael Facquet's excellent playback and/or encoder open source plug-ins) which support Winamp's media library?

I know you guys added native Ogg Vorbis support a while back. Would be nice to have native FLAC support also for users that don't know to find or install plug-ins. Thanks in advance.

Ok, I've posted in Winamp Bug Reports forum.
I'm just copying what I wrote there:

Problem: When I close Winamp and then try to re-open it quickly (eg. by double-clicking on an audio file), it either freezes the Windows Explorer for few seconds and wont open, or it simply wont open. Double-clicking the file again in few seconds opens Winamp normally.

I've tried reinstalling Winamp and even deleting everything in the Winamp folder, I've tried other Winamp 5 versions, but the problem is still here. Using Winamp 5.22

As DJEgg indicates, the Media Library is completely modular now. It is easier than before (even as of version 5.13) to eradicate the home-phoning/tethering/adware/kewl AOL stuff from your Winamp installation.

Before version 5.22, there was a bit of - I don't want to say "hidden", but for many people, obviously, it effectively was - work involved in keeping these beasties away. Those same options are still there, PLUS you now can completely remove the Media Library components that might do things you don't want as if they were any other 3rd party plugin. I personally won't be upgrading past 5.13 until some iPod plugin issues get resolved, but I think this particular line of attack on the product is a bit unfair.

Yes, native flac support is planned for a future release.

@ jmartis

Hmm, I can't personally reproduce that problem, but I'm sure it will be looked into.
Do you have "allow multiple instances" checked/unchecked in Prefs > General Preferences?
If it's unchecked, then only one instance can be run at a time, so you won't be able to open another instance until the first one has completely shut down (shutdown times depend on sys specs and the number of plugins installed - whether native or 3rd-party).

[edit] and if you're opening/closing winamp quite frequently (I personally keep it open all the time, heh), then you should probably be using a classic skin instead of a modern one [/edit]

I tried ticking the "Allow Multiple Instances" in options but it didnt help.

Ofcourse. My rant was from a personal POV, not considering that Winamp has to bring in some money to AOL, as the content provider it is rebranding itself to be these days. I just believe that "Game cheats and tips" is a bit of a .. uhm, misplacement inside a media player package despite it being possible to disable or not.

Cheers.

To each his/her own, I guess. I personally don't find that optional feature/service of much use either, but you can be guaranteed that someone else will.

Did you try using the classic skin as DJ-Egg suggested?

Personally I cannot replicate your issue
