Oggenc vs. Oggdrop

hm I ripped all my files into both wav and vorbis1.0 (oggenc of course) with eac. because of further releases of vorbis I ripped them all to simple wavs since i don't want to ripp them all again, just encode.

now the only thing I can use is oggdrop, isn't it ? what is oggdrop based on ? is it just a frontend which uses the oggenc.exe or is oggdrop a different thing which provides (slightly) worse  (or even better?) quality?

what are the advantages of oggenc/oggdrop?

can i use oggenc to encode 1000s of wavs automatically ?

oggdrop is a frontend to the OggVorbis libraries, exactly the same libraries as used by oggenc. The only real difference between the two is that oggdrop provides a more user friendly frontend and makes mass encoding easier to achieve from already ripped wave files.

You can test for yourself, but you will find that both produce identical results.

Version 1.6 of oggdropXPd, currently in beta, also offers the ability to accept LPAC, FLAC and APE (Monkey's Audio) files as direct input. Just drop these files as though they were ordinary wave files. These files are first decoded, only takes a few seconds, and then encoded as normal. oggenc2 offers extended lossless file input to include LPAC, FLAC, APE, Shorten, WavPack and OptimFROG input. So you can save space and rip to one of these lossless formats if you wish.

You may 'drop' as many files as you wish using oggdrop, they will just be queued and processed in turn.

Alternatively, you could use Speek's Multi Frontend, or Oggifier, from: http://home.wanadoo.nl/~w.speek/speek.htm, and encode/decode/transcode to and from just about everything!!

Your choice is not as limited as you thought, is it?

wow thank you that's really good because I always liked the easy way how oggdrop encodes files.
just drop all my folders and that's it. I guess my pc will be encoding for several days without any break when a new release of vorbis comes out.

so it was a good idea to keep all my cds as wavs on my hd (90gigs    )

Xenion:

If you use WinVorbis, you can encode, tag, and vorbisgain your files in one go. It doesn't accept losslessly compressed files as input though.

WinVorbis is a frontend for OggEnc and Co.
