New to Ogg Vorbis... better than mp3(LAME) or AAC?

Hey.

I have just started to try out the Ogg Vorbis codec and I am wondering if there is any sort of advantage, sound quality wise, to using this as opposed to mp3(LAME) or AAC audio? Just for the record, I have encoded a couple of songs in Ogg Vorbis at quality setting of 6 and I am using the aoTuV beta 4 encoder.

At q6's bitrates, pretty much all of those formats are going to be identical.  You'd have to almost half bitrate before it started to matter.

Edit:  Though ogg is a very nice format.  I like the tagging, and free encoders.  If you have it as an option, I'd recommend it.

Okay.... thanks for the info. I am using it with EAC and hoping that I have the right one too(LOL) since there seem to be so many to choose from. One thing I meant to ask in my original post, but forgot was if Ogg Vorbis encoding is considered CBR or VBR?

Vorbis encoding is VBR by default. There is a CBR mode, but it should only be used in special cases. (internet radio broadcasts, etc.)

The CBR mode is also much much slower than the VBR mode, and the quality is probably lower too.

I prefer OGG at lower bitrates such as 32kbps.

I've found it to be almost identical to the original at 96kbps, though the codec has improved since. In listening tests Vorbis is always one of the best performers.
Veni Vidi Vorbis.

In my experience, at low bitrates (i.e < 112 kbps), no encoder is without artifact. But I *personally* found that Vorbis' artifacts are (1) still acceptable, and (2) easily masked by road noise.

That's why I transcoded nearly all my MP3's into Ogg Vorbis.

Subjectively there shouldn't be. It should be on par or better then the other two in a consensus of listening tests. Objectively is entirely different story.

For most music, it's the same for me. Only with close listening can I spot any difference, and not all the time even. It's very impressive.
