Yeah, APE is not dead at all. Matthew just recently released a new v4 GUI and the updated codec will follow soon.

So far, monkey's insane preset produces the least size files but with too high costs ;-) I would like to give OptimFrog a try but it's still not open sourced.

MPC encoder was closed until v1.14 and that didn't stop HA advocacy.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as there is a decoder, besides Ghido is no amateur.

in the HA world... "dead" means "there are better options and there isn't any reason to keep using it" - like:

vqf
shorten

monkey's audio is a horrible, deprecated format, but i wouldn't call it "dead" because windows people still think it's cool.

Please do not spout trollish opinions like these without first backing them up with some facts.

You really couldn't be farther from the truth. Monkeys is one of the better formats out there. It has good compression, speed and the best lossless GUI there is.

Wow, program(s) drop support for it (by default) then all of a sudden it is dead, way to go...go Wavpack...go FLAC everything else is crap. Great philosophy being preached.

last time i tested ape and ofr (long while ago) with both on their respective 'extreme' settings, both files were about the same size... i could play the ape no problem, but the ofr maxed my p4 2.4ghz and couldn't playback in  a listenable manner

monkey's audio is far from dead
