Problem with MP3Gain

Hi.  I've been trying to use MP3Gain, but have been unable to.  When I try to open the MP3GainGUI, an installation starts.  It stops when it can't find the "SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin."  I've found that this is an Adobe plugin.  But I don't have it and don't want to spend $99 for it.  But I haven't read anything of MP3Gain needing it.  Does anyone know why it's doing this and how I can get past it to use the program?  Thanks for any help.

thanks for the welcome.

i downloaded mp3gain from that site.  i'm not sure why it's looking for the plugin.  i haven't seen any mention of this in searching for a solution.  i'm running the program on windows xp media center 2002 edition, if that helps.

dont take offence but yould you describe in detail what you did step by step?
e.g., dowloaded this file, installed it, run the exe, etc.

No offense taken.  Here's what I did:

1) I downloaded and ran the full install of MP3Gain (I tried both 1_2_5 and 1_3_4 full exe versions)

2) After going through the install, I elect to run MP3Gain in the last box.

3) MP3Gain opens doing a "Windows Install" which stops when it cannot find the "SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin."  It comes up with a dialog box asking me to specify where the Plugin file is.  I hit cancel at this point and get the following message:  "Error 1706:  No valid source could be found for product SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin.  The Windows Installer cannot continue."

4) If I close the error box, it tries doing the Install on the Plugin again.  I end up having to go into the Windows Task Manager to stop the program.

5) If I then try to open MP3Gain through the Programs in the Start Menu, I get the same results.

Hope this helps.  If there's any other information that you're looking for that you think may help, I'll be happy to answer to the best of my ability.  Thanks.

Did you uninstall MP3gain before re-installing it?
If the problem persist, try to scann your machine with Adaware, spybot or a similar software.
If you still can't use MP3gain GUI, you may be interested to know that the 14th beta of foobar2000 allows people to "hard-replaygain" MP3 tracks. It works pretty well, but currently there's no way to automatically restore initial gain.

just downloaded MP3Gain again and didn't had any problems. I would classify sourceforge as a trusted source so I think the problem is at your side.
as guruboolez suggested, scan your PC for malware and also viruses (I suggest Nod32 standalone version).

Sounds like either a) cross-linked files or b) trashed registry

a) run chkdsk on the suspected partition
b) roll back to a known good system backup or do a clean install

It may be a hiccup with the MS Installer. I've had situations where I load a program and MSI pops up and insists I put the Office 2000 CD in the drive.
Do you know of any other audio apps that you've loaded recently? This SmartSound plugin may be part of it.

I got exactly the same problem and what I did to solve it is to uninstall SmartSound plugin via the control panel.
I hope this helps!
