Confused about LG DVD writers

Hello!

Some of you might have read the other post I made about the LG GSA-2166D. Anyways, to make it short, a friend of mine recently bought the unit and gave it to me for one day. After doing some tests, I have to say that I am quite pleased by its writing quality. However, since I don't need an external device, I would like to buy the internal "brother" of the GSA-2166D. The LG pages shows two devices: the GSA-4166B and the GSA-4167B. Both devices have a rated DVD+R DL speed of 6x while the external GSA-2166D supports writing to 8x. Any idea why? Also, what IS the difference between the two drives (4166B and 4167B that is)?

Regards,
Sebastian

Not exactly an answer, but i have the 4167B and im not that pleased with it.

It has a different offset to the on you descibe in your other thread, the read offset is +667. EAC reports it doesn't cache, i haven't tested further, but I have read a few reports it actually does cache.

I have tested single layer burns using Datawrite 8x media (Ritek G05) and Infiniti 16X media (can't remember the die off the top of my head)

I did some cdspeed quality tests using my Lite-on 166S DVD reader and the quality of both were horrible. I even tried the Datawrite at 4x and it looked really bad. The burner didn't support cdspeed, the start button was greyed out.

I'm not sure if results from the 166S are OK, i wasn't sure if you had to use a burner or if readers were ok??

I can post some scans of it if you like?

Also, it has riplock so copying CSS encrypted discs takes a litle longer, average read speed ~4x

If i could afford to get another i certainly would't buy this again. My Pionerr 107D was my previous burner and produced much better burns on DVD.

I haven't tried CD burning at all yet, i never burn CD's.

OT - I though DVD-RAM media was supported nativily in windows XP, no need for additional packet writing software like incd. thats what i read by lots of other users anyway.

Cheers,

Kristian

I don't know the differences but in the LG-DVD-Burner-Forum @ cdfreaks.com is a thread about a review of the LG GSA-4167B-drive - this forum is a good start I guess...

Thanks, I also had a look at the review on CDRInfo, but I'm still clueless regarding the difference between the 4167B and the 4166B. Both seem to support LightScribe, DVD-RAM, 6x DVD±R DL, 32x CD-RW...

I know there are a few Polish speakers here, maybe they can shed some light?

Bah, an i thought it did!

Appears the 4166 does but according to TDB (The Dangerous Brother) HERE the 4166 is:

...based on a totally different platform, more like the 4161/4162 design.

It's the 4168 that is suposadly gonna be the 4167 with lightscribe?! I wouln't mind betting thats simply a firmware issue though.
