Thanks

As far as I can tell the second generation Hi-MD players  (introduced from spring 2005) can all play MP3 however the only way to get it onto the disc is via Sony's "Sonic Stage" application which adds DRM to the file on the way through. It is also extremely slow to download.

If you need gapless playback, PCM record ability or the naming and editing features that MD gives you buy all means get one.

However if don't you are better of buying a hard disk based portable audio player.

Thanks.

You say that it adds DRM. Where is it added : on mp3 on my hard-disk ? Or only in the MD player (i don't care then) ?

Is it so slow : to transfer 1 Go of mp3 on a HI-MD disk, how long does it takes ?

Thanks in advance.

MP3 does not support DRM do the software must convert it to some DRMed proprietary format (Atrac, I guess) before placing it on the player.

No : MZ-RH710 supports mp3 natively.
We are not obliged to convert it to ATRAC-3.

Well, there is no official or popular DRM scheme for MP3 so something must be up. Perhaps the player has implemented features of its own. As far as I know though DRMd MP3 does not exist.

I mean you can't get it back off the MD disc, again Sonic Stage stops you doing it and the MD is not availible just as a disc to Windows as most HDD players are.

I don't know if it tries to do anything nasty with the MP3 you import into SonicStage but even if it doesn't you can just have another copy lying about the place that SonicStage doesn't know about.

On a side note DRM is usually a property of the container format. It's perfectly possible to put MPEG audio data inside say an asf file and DRM that. The thing is that no one would actually want to do it

I think that's exactly what Sony does. I've heard one or two people complaining about slow transfer rates putting their MP3's on their Sony players, so I guess SonicStage doesn't keep a DRM-wrapped copy of the MP3, but rather it puts the MP3 audio in a DRM'ed container format *as part of the transfer process*, every time.

SS doesn't touch your files on HD but the copies on player are protected so that you can't transfer them to any computer other than the one you used to put them on disc.

Actually this is no longer true. With the latest release of SonicStage 3.4 you can upload tracks to any computer with no DRM whatsoever, plus it contains the new ATRAC Advanced Lossless option. It may be too little and too late to save the MD but it is nice for those of us who are too cheap (or too hard-headed) to get a HDD player.

MD are only useful to record concerts nowadays. 1GB? I can buy another DAP, flash based.
