Best WAV format in EAC?

Hi!

I wanted to ask which WAV format in EAC (v.0.95 b3) is the best (got best quality / no compression)?

Im actually using Windows MSAudio Encoder / 128 kBit/s, 44 100 Hz, Stereo

Ooh, where to start?

WMA is not WAVE format.

I assume that you are creating WMA (Windows Media Audio) files with that encoder.  Many people do not rate WMA, and prefer lossy codecs such as MP3, OGG, or AAC.

Where do you play your files?  Is lossless a consideration?

You really need to do a bit of research into the codecs at hand.  Sufficing to say that no, WMA is not the best.

If you really want no compression then go for PCM WAVE - or more sensibly if you want no artifacts/loss of quality go for a lossless format like FLAC or WavPack.

If lossless is overkill for you, and you want to stay around the 128kbps mark then MP3, OGG or AAC would be a good place to look - depending on your needs.  There is a listening test underway at the moment, but the results of a previous test can be found here.

Edit: Looking at the EAC dialogue, if you don't want to spend much time on this, then my suggestion would be "LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.0 - 3.97 (beta 2)".  Make sure you use "Do not write WAV header to file" and enter ".mp3" in the "File extension for headerless files" text box.

However
, you can get much better results using the "External Compression" tab and an encoder of your choice.  Here is one example.

Im using EAC to rip to WAV (I got External Compression disabled) and then Im using some other soft to create MP3s (VBR using APS preset). MSAudio Encoder was default. I was thinking it might not be the best and PCM might be better (from EAC list of WAV formats), just wanted to make sure, cause I need the best WAVs possible  Thx!

BTW. When I choose PCM should I have "Do not write WAV header to file" turned ON and in box it should be .mp3?

If you are extracting to wave files - i.e.: clicking the top button ("WAV") to rip to track WAVE files, or using "Action > Copy Image & Create CUE Sheet > Uncompressed"  - then the value of the dropdown on the Waveform tab of the compression options is not actually used.

That dropdown is actually used to select an encoder when compressing files - i.e.: using the second button down ("MP3"), or "Action > Copy Image & Create CUE Sheet > Compressed".

I may be confused.

Edit:

If you just delete the wave files after you encode to MP3 why not just let EAC do it, using LAME as an external compressor?

Also, the HA recommendation is "-V2 --vbr-new" now, using LAME 3.97b2.

Check the wiki link I posted above.

Just follow the wiki for setting up EAC.  There are many guides on doing it, but you don't really need to mess around with the WAV settings when all you are planning on doing is creating a lossless 128 kb/s format.

If you have EAC use an external compressor than you can't even select an encoder settings for the wav files, as I remember it.

Don't confuse the newbie with wrong choice of words. (as you must mean lossy 128kbps). He said he is planning neither on lossless nor on lossy 128kbps.

To re-iterate what has been answered already:
The "waveform" options in EAC belong to the "COMPRESSION" options.
But you want to rip to WAV - you use command Copy UNCOMPRESSED, and compression options have no effect.

/EDIT: ...and, yeah, it would make much more sense to configure EAC to rip to compressed mp3 using LAME encoder.
