Need general info about filters and EQs

I'd like to know more about filters an equalizers.
Which types do exist and what situations are they appropriate to be used on?
Also which free or open source software is avaliable and how are the ones included in Audition and other professional audio editing programs?

 Hey Man, that is a pretty complex question. Are you talking about listening only or also recording ? All studios will use some kind of filter and equalizing on recording.  What is the background of your question ?
