Mp3 Vs Mpc, Ogg, & Aac

Hi

I thing MP3s created using the "--alt-preset standard" switch are very good quality!

Which switchs for MPC, OGG, & AAC do you need to use to create the same results as the "--alt-preset standard" switch?

ogg: around -q6,0 and 6,5

For AAC (Psytel): -normal

For ogg I'd go with -q 6.25, which gives you nice nominal 200 kbps, which is what aps averages around in most cases and should give you a bit better quality than aps.

What's aps?

The word transcoding has been mentioned quite a few times in this forum!  What is it?

Is it when you convert high quality file to lower quality
Is it when you convert one lossy format to another
or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I believe transcoding is just re-encoding something that has previously been encoded.

So if I did this

mp3 --> wav --> ogg

is that transcoding

or is transcoding straight from

mp3 --> ogg

?

They are both transcoding..

I pretty sure "wav" isn’t a coded file, [trans][coding] means changing from one coded file to another.

The wav is the result of an already decreased in sound quality source, since it comes from mp3...encoding that to ogg will lower the quality even more. Westgroveg might be typically right about the term transcoding and if it applies correctly here, but the important thing is that the concluded sound quality will be the same regardless if you choose to go straight from mp3 to ogg, or use wav as an inbetween step.

This representation confuses things. In reality, it's more like:

mp3/mp3 -> pcm/wav -> vorbis/ogg

and

mp3/mp3 -> pcm/RAM -> vorbis/ogg

It's clearer now that they are both the same thing.

Can't you "transcode" to the same format? Otherwise, if you did it (to lower the bitrate for example) what would you call the operation... "ciscode"?

This is different from bitrate peeling... which doesn't generate the pcm/wav to do the job and therefore works better. (ogg will eventually support this I think).

Re-encode. The word trans is like cross so I would think transcoding=crosscoding if that makes it easier  .

Re-encoding: pcm/CD->pcm/RAM->mp3/mp3
Transcoding: mp3/mp3->pcm/RAM->vorbis/ogg or mp3/mp3->pcm/wav->vorbis/ogg

Ciscoding(?): mp3/mp3->pcm/RAM->mp3/mp3(lower bitrate and much lower quality)
shday: Nice idea, but you will lose as much as by transcoding because the transform is applied twice.

Re-encoding: pcm/CD->pcm/RAM->mp3/mp3

This is getting dumber by the minute but one last hit, how can: Re(2)-encoding=pcm/CD->pcm/RAM->mp3/mp3 if the code is only applied once?
I think:
Re-encode=multiple encodes of one code. e.g. mp3=decode=mp3

Transcoding=encoding from one code to another e.g mp3=decode=ogg

Ciscoding???.

I think what he means is that "re-encoding" is usually used about encoding again from the original source, with different parameters...

You obviously need to do a search on re-encoding vs transcoding. But qristus got it right, as well as shday elaborated on an interesting subject "ciscoding". Is this "ciscoding" commonly done by internet radio stations or..? Just wondering if they have a name for it.
