First of all, this seems to me a strange question. However, it can be answered.

I have a colleage and he tries to practice playing a guitar. So far so good, but he looks for appropriate midi files during working time and by doing so, he bothers me with that terrible midi sound. He first wants to listen to it before downloading the midi sequence. So I went search for good sounding midi playback software, for my own sake. I stumbled upon Timidity, a piece of software based upon soundfonts that sounds much better than the midi synthesizer built-in your soundcard. It can save it as a wav. This you can convert it to mp3, if you like.

and btw... Midi is not an audio format. A midi files contains information of played notes on a instrument etc. A midi file can be also used to control a gm soundbank, which you are refering too. Than the quality of the sound depends of the quality of that soundbank.

ohh thank the lord I was about to tee off! yes for the 100TH time MIDI is specification it's not a file format! (it outlines most hardware/software interaction) MIDI data just contains sequenced information such as instructing the synthesizer what notes to play. The actual synthesis is either FM Synthesis or current Wavetable Synthesis.  I am assuming Timidity is Wavetable Synthesizer that's the only reason it can convert to PCM in realtime (I am guessing that's what soundfonts are based upon).

You can also try Synthfont, it can even directly sequence midi to mp3 if setup properly. You don't even need a soundcard cause it will be done 100% in software mode (like in timidity). It's easy to use and gives good results for me.
