Removing echo/reverb in speech..

Hi, I'm editing a speech/statement in Sony SoundForge 7.0, and the problem is that the speaker was filmed in a large hall with no special recording equipment, just a regular camera mike. The effect is that the speech has massive reverb and echo on it, as if he is talking in a great big concert hall. I've played around with the plugins, but to no avail. Does anyone know of a technique that I can use? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. this forum is great! masses of audio knowledge.. /me trundles off to read the threads

You can try to gate the reverb out.  But you'll probably loose some speech.  Not an easy job you've given yourself.

If i remember corretly the application "postfish" Monty released is supposed to be able to remove reverberation from an audio file. You might want to check that. I don't know, if there's a windows build nor I did not try postfish for myself.
