MusicBrainz?

Know what would be the most kickass foobar2000 component ever? A MusicBrainz component that would allow you to right-click on some track(s) in the playlist and choose "Tag with MusicBrainz" or something and then it would build the acoustic fingerprint(s), query the MusicBrainz server, and properly tag the file(s).

OMFG best idea in like... as many years as MusicBrainz has existed.

Jepp, a good Idea.

it would require a trm-creator which would use another decoder than the one foobar uses, or with limited capabilities in finding the right track and only look for albums (kind of the "picard project":s current status, the next tracker from musicbrainz).

Well, musicbrainz sources ARE available, so if someone with the time and capabilities would take a look, i think a lot of new people would get their eyes on musicbrainz and foobar.

That plugin would have to offer all the same options as Musicbrainz though. I have tagged all my music with Musicbrainz, but you have to look things up often enough.

I've always wished the MusicBrainz tagger would have an option to automatically choose the earliest record it finds for a file, for example when it finds multiple records due to re-releases and 'greatest hits' compilations, etc. But yes, the foobar2000 component would have to have an interface for choosing albums as well if multiple hits were returned.

I hope MusicBrainz is much better 5-10 years from now, though. For example, I'd like to see it also tag year and genre. Right now I think it just does artist, track title, and album, right?

Yeah , I think it would not to hard to code.
First the component should ask the Freedb Server for the CD Related information.
Then it should connect to the musicbrainz server and compare the Tracklenght or Tracktitles with the Archive stored in the Musicbrainz Server.
And finaly it will add the tags of your Archive from the Mb Server.
So Multible Choices are reduced due Tagging
, Im not a Coder but i think this the way to go

It does tag for year (origyear) and country it was released from (at least the picardtagger (the nextgeneration of musicbrainztagger) does).
Genre is a wee bit hard to find common ground for how to implement, but it might be something that they will include in the future (me, myself still wonders why people tag genre, don't they know what they are listening to, or what? )

Russ from audioscrobbler actually did a trm-component for foobar2000 (or so he claimed on irc a while back). Musicbrainz heart and soul in finding a specific track is the trm, so that is the first priority. Next would be looking up the info at the server and thirdly to combine a group of tracks to a album. (it could be done the other way around, the picard tagger is developed that way...)

well, i would really like to see that a plug-in gets released, because imho musicbrainz is a really neat way to tag your music files; especially if you haven't full albums, because then you can't tag them with freedb.
so i hope someone, who is able to code it, will do it; i guess, it's not too tough...
another fact, why the original musicbrainz software isn't the best choice is that it doesn't support apev2 tags, but only idv3 - so it's now quite a little bit uncomfortable...
it would be cool, if you just can tag artist/album/tracknumber/title/year - genre isn't implemented so far iirc; btw, if there are more releases (greatest hits, best ofs, ...), the first one should be chosen.

justanother (without the ability to code the plug-in by himself)

MusicBrainz devs have said explicitly that they despise the categorization of music into genres, so I doubt it will ever happen.

I would also like to add my support for the development of a musicbrainz tagger plugin. Currently, the official musicbrainz taggers have many limitations, including:

* No support for APEv2 tags (only ID3V1.1, ID3v2, and OGG tags)
* No support for any compression formats other than mp3, ogg, flac, and wav
* Users cannot select which musicbrainz tags to write. Use of the musicbrainz taggers results in 11 tags being written to your file, when you might only want the musicbrainz ID tags written.

Soon audioscrobbler will implement musicbrainz ID support into their system, so there will probably be an increased interest in a musicbrainz tagger that will not be limited as the official taggers currently are.

For reference, musicbrainz has made a development library available called TunePimp

I still like it too. I guess it would just require sending the song filepaths to the MB executable somehow, in the simplest form... A more integrated approach would be great though.

MP3s have patents related to them too but it's considered an open standard...

Bull. You have to pay licensing fees if you want to distribute an MP3 encoder. LAME gets round this somehow (they don't officially distribute libraries, they claim it is for educational purposes etc.)

A little offtopic, It seems to me that MusicIP is using the user mantained musicbrainz metaDB (and users) and charging for that. See their MusicDNS service.
To me they are literally ripping off everyone who contributed to the "open" musicbrainz metadatabase and I wonder if they are giving anything back (if MusicIP is paying for musicbrainz's server costs then I take everything back)...
I might be wrong but if that is the case it is reason enough to keep distance from musicbrainz, their Picard tagger and MusicIP. If that is the case, thank God I never contributed to musicbrainz.

Sorry for the rant....
