Can MP3 CDs Be Ripped With Exact Audio Copy?

Hi,

I was given some mp3 cds, and was able to rip them onto my pc with dBpowerAMP. But, I'd prefer to rip them with Exact Audio Copy. Is this possible? I haven't had any luck. If EAC is defnitely not an option, do you know of a program that's especially good for making clean rips of mp3 cds?
Thanks for any help. -Rob

If the CD is Red Book audio decompressed from MP3, then EACis your best choice.

If it is a CD with a bunch of MP3s on it, any program will do. It is already "computer data" and it has better error correction/detection than Red Book, thus making data copying inherently secure.

Regarding sound degragation, is it a bad idea to rip mp3 cds to mpc?
Thanks, Rob

its never a good idea to convert from a lossy source  to lossy again.  The sound degradation is variable, it will largely depend on your original MP3 bitrate.

Yes.  This would be transcoding (search the forums).  Just copy the data to your computer.

I'm still not having any luck ripping the mp3 discs with EAC. I haven't had any problems with regular cds and cd-rs. This is what the mp3 disc looks like in EAC. -Rob

As was said before, you can't use EAC to rip MP3 cds.

Just copy the files onto your computer using Explorer.

The only CDs that need to be "ripped" are regular audio CDs.

One more question, regarding mp3 cds. Does the same hold true with burning mp3 cds as regular cds, a slower burning speed will generally yield better results? Or, does speed not matter when it comes to mp3 cds?
Thanks, -Rob

MP3 CDs are regular data CDs. There is nothing different abou t them. If your CD burner produces good results when you burn regular data at low speeds, then you must do the same with MP3 CDs too. Only you know your computer best

EAC "rips" the audio information from a regular audio cd and puts it into "computer-data" format; this isn't necessary to do with a data cd full of mp3 files (or a data cd with anything else on it, for that matter); your computer can read and copy the information directly.

However, EAC also deals with getting information off of scratched audio cd's. If you have a scratched data cd, Windows may fail in attempting to copy a file from the cd to your hard drive, giving you a message like "cyclic redundancy error" or something of the sort. In cases like this, I have found IsoBuster to be very useful; it is helpful for copying stuff from scratched or damaged data cd's.

Also, a note on terminology. "mp3 cd" can be somewhat misleading, because it refers to a data cd with mp3 files on it, but just to clarify: an mp3 cd is a data cd with mp3 files on it. An audio cd (Red Book standard, to play in a regular cd player) is an audio cd whether the music on it was originally decoded from mp3 files, or not. Most mix cd's you receive from friends are songs decoded from mp3 files (and often crappy mp3 files), but they are audio cd's, not mp3 cd's. The music on such cd's is not in mp3 format.
