Green Day - American Idiot

Apart from political contents, this Green Day new album is in my opinion one of their best works, second only to "Dookie" (1994). The songs into "American Idiot" are fresh, original and have strong catchy melodies.

With all the those Pop/Rock/Punk bands that are nothing but already listened music, Green Day make the difference.

I can't comment on American Idiot as I haven't heard it - only the two singles thus far (that I am aware of).

However, your post has intrigued me enough that I may have to give it a try.

I was heavily into Dookie, Insomniac and partly Nimrod - but when I heard the single Minority it kinda killed my appetite for any further Green Day, assuming that they had had their day. I actually thought they'd brought out a new album with Minority and Warning on - but on checking their discography it seems they didn't (unless you count their collection International Superhits), so I'm not as behind as I thought!

I would say that American Idiot didn't really turn my head (nothing new) - but Boulevard Of Broken Dreams is a very good track.

In a similar vein, I know a lot of people rate Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication, but personally I would say By The Way was a superb return to form after Blood Sugar Sex Magic (even though One Hot Minute and Californication are not hard on the ears).

Maybe I'll give Green Day one last try...

Am I the only one who thinks it sounds like he's singing:

I had three of their original CD's back from the early 90's (10,000 Smoothed Out Slap Happy Hour's, etc)  including Dookie and Insomniac. Dookie was pretty much one of my favorites from back then and Insomaic was a close second. I heard some of the track's off Nimrod and then after that I kind of gave up on them. I wasn't really interested in their new stuff, although the thing I like about them is overall as a band they have grown from a simple punk band into something more complicated. American Idiot caught my attention though due to the fact that seems like a well written album and is more politically motivated ;-D.

Sorry for being nitpicky but its called "1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" due to it being a compilation of "39/Smooth LP", "Slappy EP" and "1000 Hours EP."  Their 1991 release "Kerplunk!" was my favorite of their underproduced pre-major release early years.  Its writing as at least as good as the writing on Dookie, the sound certainly isn't the best but I would still highly recommend it to any big Dookie fans.  I really enjoyed all their music up until Warning, which I hated.  I guess I'll have to give "American Idiot" a listen.  I quite like "American Idiot" the song as their debut in the political arena, so many artists seem to be going this route due to Bush: NOFX, Pennywise, EMINEM?!?!?!.  For now I am enjoying "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," however, if it continues to be played in such heavy rotation for too long it might go the way of "Time of Your Life" which I initially liked, then later began to loath because I couldn't every seem to escape it.

'American Idiot' was a huge disappointment though. Of course my music-taste shifted a lot in the last years, but IMHO they are trying to hard to sound like they did on Dookie. 'Warning' was brilliant because it sounded like natural progression of their sound, 'American Idiot' sounds like they are trying to appeal to 14-year-olds again, which they should rather leave to other bands.
