FLAC 1.1.1a OggFLAC and Winamp plugin

Basically copied from this thread

As lots of people were discussing winamp/oggflac problems thats where I first replied, but no response. Since that was only the "Validated News" forum I thought maybe I posted in the wrong place. Maybe a larger response when in the correct forum

Am I correct in assuming the winamp plugin with FLAC 1.1.1a still is not correctly working for OggFLAC files?

Just started using FLAC myself, but I asked another person who regularly encodes to lossless with FLAC to try playing an ogg flac file in winamp and had the same problem, it didn't play at all.

Just for the hell of it I also tried playing them in a media player with dshow filters. I wasn't sure since it was an ogg file if it was decoded with FLAC or not. But with OggDS, CoreFLAC, and CoreVorbis all installed, none would play the ogg flac file. Just for reference I don't use giant codec/filter packs.

I hope the "problem", if it is one, or just my fault is fixed soon. Just wondering though, do ogg flac's use the same tagging editor as ogg vorbis files? I suppose it could just be the fault of the winamp plugin, but the FLAC tagging seemed somewhat bare. I wanted to try an ogg flac to see if it had the same somewhat large commenting area as ogg vorbis files.

Why 1.1.1a? I think that 1.1.1 was the latest version. Why "a"?

the winamp plugin does not play ogg flac.  as far as I know, since winamp keys off the filename extension, what's needed is a general ogg plugin that can handle multiple contained codecs, since both ogg flac and ogg vorbis files end in .ogg.

ogg flac should play in illiminable's directshow filters.  not sure why it doesn't work in others but it may have to do with the different ogg flac mappings; see also http://flac.sourceforge.net/ogg_mapping.html

ogg flac tags cannot be edited with vorbis tools.  tags are not part of the ogg layer, they are in each individual codec which handles them differenly. even though the comment spec for vorbis and flac are the same, the overall packet structure is different.

Is there another more current release other than 1.1.1a that I'm missing ? Yeah thats just the one I also found on the FLAC sourceforge page as well.

I understand FLAC cannot be edit'ed with Vorbis, as they are separate codecs entirely. I thought since they were both part of the same container now, OGG, they might have similar Tag fields and such.

Yeah thats what I would assume would be needed. However there is no plugin like that now eh?

So I guess my next question. Can anyone play OggFLAC files at all in any players? Besides using dshow with illiminable's filters. Foobar I suppose works?

Maybe it's just Flac 1.1.1a now, I'm not sure. Even just using mostly defaults to make the FLAC file.

Code: [Select]
flac.exe -8 -V --ogg "blah.wav"

Yields an oggflac file I find to be nearly unplayable. Only illiminable's directshow filters seem to recognize and decode it properly. But neither winamp nor foobar2k (0.8.3) will play the file.

However using the Diskwriter output in Foobar2k, and it's Legacy 0.7 FLAC output, you can make playable oggflac files for foobar itself and also illiminable.

So I guess the FLAC 1.1.1a ogg container is still just not ready? Or neither of the plugins for foobar2k or winamp can play it properly? Does anyone even use oggflac or just me? Or everyone uses oggflac but not with windows

please read the page at the link I posted.  Ogg FLAC 1.1.1 uses a new mapping which other players might not be current with.

Just in case you haven't noticed yet, a 1.1.1-compatible foobar2000 FLAC plugin has been out for a long time. Have you tried it?

edit: Oops. Never mind. I think you already know.
