Memorex DVD+R

Hi,
I have decided to back up my MP3s to DVDs this weekend. I read in some forums that the Memorex 4x DVD+R were good disks and that they were made by Ricoh. I bought a pack of five in jewel cases. I don't have a DVD burner, but my friend has a laptop (which he bought about a month ago) with a DVD burner. I am pretty sure that it can handle 4x DVD+-R as it is a new laptop. I don't know the make/model of the burner on the laptop as I haven't seen the machine yet.
My questions are:
  • Is the Memorex DVD+R really a good disk?
  • What is the best speed to write to the disk using Nero? The label on the DVD says it can be written at 4x or 2.4x. Which one should I use?
I would like to point out that I already have the data on DVD-Rs and will be doing a disc-to-disc copy via an image file. I am making backup copies of my back-ups. You might say I am pretty paranoid  .
That's all for now. Please advise.

Memorex 4x DVD+R can be Ricoh,  CMC or MBI. The quality will then depend on which it is. Better hope it be Ricoh =).

CD Freaks' media test results archive has a lot of examples of all three - have a look.

Well, it says "Made in Taiwan", so that rules out MBI. I just hope it isn't CMC.

I once did a test with Verbatim DVD+R 4x media, burned one with 2.4x and one with 4x and compared KProbe results (...), but there wasn't any difference. So i guess you can safely use 4x.

Anyone knows where the Ricoh media is manufactured? In Taiwan?

Why's that? Do you wanna support Taiwanese economy or something? Anyway.. here's a list where the media manufacturers are located, maybe it's of interest for you:

Taiwan: CMC, Daxon, Infodisc, Lead Data, Nan Ya, Optodisc, Princo, Prodisc, Ritek

Japan: JVC, Maxell, MCC, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sony, Taiyo Yuden, TDK

Europe: DDDessau, Euro Digital Disc, MAM-E, MPO, Philips, Sentinel

South Korea: BeAll, SKC

India: Moser Bear

I disagree ... today's RICOHJPNR01 & RICOHJPNR02 are being manufactured in Taiwan by Ritek ... using Ricoh's quality control and technology. Ricoh does not have the production capacity for the mass market yet. You may seldomly find RICOHJPNR01 from Japan (mostly the large TDK DVD+R 4x boxes) but the majority comes from taiwan indeed (along with CMC).

The only manufacturer that still produces in Japan is TY (there are some older -R discs floating around that show "Made In Japan" with the manufacturer code MEI00V001 but theser are older Panasonic 2x discs labelled LM-RT120E)

Oh, by the way ... Nanya 4x -R discs (NANYAJC001 being sold by EMTEC) are being labelled as "Made In Germany" ...

Edit: typo
The name was Plex The Ripper, not Jack The Ripper

Hm, that's quite misleading then. Japanese company with JPN in manufacturer ID lets taiwanese company make their media...
