Cool, will try as soon as I get back home  I hope they have done something to the analog input problem with > 48KHz playback enabled.

Just a side note related to Envy24 HT-S drivers:

If you use Linux and have an Envy 24 HT-S based card (like the Chaintech AV710) be aware that this card will work perfectly, provided you use alsa-drivers newer than 1.0.6rc1. Those included with the stock kernel (up to 2.6.8.1) don't work as expected - producing horrible noise on the analog outputs. The ALSA drivers included with the current -mm kernels are 1.0.6 (AFAIK) and work perfectly.

If you are having trouble with this card then download the current alsa-driver set from alsa-project.org, ./configure --with-cards=ice1724, make and make install. Then either reboot or modprobe -r -a snd_* then modprobe snd_ice1724.

Just sharing this because it took me awhile to find the reason my card wasn't working after I upgraded my kernel.

Is there still the volume bug (the master volume control only affecting one of the channels when the high sample rate mode is enabled)?

It looks like it is still there (AV-710 with 3.24c drivers, W2kSP4). Anyone to confirm this?

This older version doesn't have that bug:

Yes, I have read that thread and that one guy claiming the bug is gone.
Anyway, that seems strange that's why I'd like other AV-710 owners to confirm if it is really gone (or if it is just me).

The volume bug still happens. I noticed it happens with regular 2 channel mode too if I use higher than > 48KHz samplerate. But I always use regular 2 channel mode with original samplerate (44.1KHz from CD's) anyway so it doesn't affect me.

Analog inputs are still either disabled (card in high samplerate mode) or messed up (2 channel mode) if > 48KHz content is played back.

Worthless drivers for me then

I just got this card becuase I wanted a cheap optical output to my reciever, but I also wanted to be able to use it with cheap PC speakers or headphones directly from the line out. I changed the jumper settings on JP3 and JP4, but no sound comes from the line out. Anyone else have this problem?

Why did you change the jumpers position? I never touched jumpers on my av710 and I have perfect-bit output through SPDIF and line out at the same time.

I think you should use the line-out next to the optical out for the quality everyone is boasting about. All other analog outs with this card are mediocre at best. JP3/JP4 affects only the front output (which we do not want to use), enabling or disabling the usage of an opamp in the signal path.

The PC speakers are not self powered, and by changing the jumpers, the sound card is supposedly supposed to power them. Also the headphones arn't loud at all (not like I'm trying to blow my ears away) but trust me, the volume is low.

Man, this sucks. I switched the jumpers back to the original positions and plugged the headphones in the plug next to the optical output. All volumes are turned all the way up and the sound is still low, you can also hear a bit of crackling.

Just wanted to resurrect this post as a record of the shite via drivers.

We're now on version 4.73b, it's Dec 2005.

I still have to revert to the 1.43 drivers because VIA hasn't fixed the damn broken volume controls in high res mode.

Unbeleivable.
