CD > FLAC > MP3 > DVD-r/H120

I would like to know if there is a walkthrough available to achieve the following.

I have recently purchased an iRiver H120 as I am going travelling and would like to take my CD collection with me. Given my source, I am currently deciding between Ogg Vorbis Q6-7 or LAME 3.90.3 MP3 using EAC to rip. However, because I won't have access to my computer and may like to change codec/format in the future I would like to back up all off my ripped files in either WAV or FLAC on DVD media and take those overseas with me. This is also in case I have problems with my H120 whilst travelling. So basically this is what I would like to do:

* Rip files using EAC
* Convert to FLAC and burn to DVD
* Encode to Vorbis/MP3
* Place compressed files onto H120

Questions I have are:

* Which FLAC quality setting should I use?
* Which program will burn those FLAC files to DVD?
* What are the advantages of Vorbis against MP3 and vice versa?
* Can EAC encode to both FLAC and another format simultaneously or will I have to encode to FLAC and then convert the FLAC files to MP3?
* I would like to normalise my files so that they are all at the same relative volume level during playback. Can this be done during the ripping/encoding process or will I apply this later? Which program can I use to achieve this?

I would really appreciate any feedback that anyone might have. Thanks.

- Flac encoding is slower on high quality settings but decoding stays the same. There are no worthy gains in using settings other than the default IMO.

- Any DVD burning software like Nero will do. Just make a DVD data disc.

- Vorbis vs mp3: Generaly with high bitrates there are no differences in normal listening with normal music - so choose the one thats most compatible / best battery life. The latest vorbis 1.1 or megamix is great for 128k or lower.

- I believe MAREO is a program that can encode simultaneously. Never used it yet.

- With mp3 use MP3GAIN, with vorbis use Vorbisgain. For Flac use Foobar2000 and apply replaygain, or flac frontend, or use --replaygain switch with EAC (trackgain only).

That is all great information. Thanks!

I have decided not to back up. It justs seems to time consuming and convoluted. I am going to use EAC with LAME 3.90.3. Unless there is a way to keep the WAV files in a separate folder whilst also encoding to MP3 simultaneously??

Other than relative quality at higher bitrates regarding both Ogg and MP3 and better support for the MP3 format, I was concerned with reports that state that MP3 can never acheive true gapless playback and Vorbis can. Is there any true in this and is the difference perceptible?

Also, for normalization purposes, I notice there is settings for this in EAC. Can these be used instead of MP3Gain with the same relative results? And how do you go about choosing the right setting? I read the tutorial on MP3Gain and it seems you have to do this AFTER encoding, not during, and as a batch which seems time consuming.

Thank you to anyone who has any further information regarding these matters.

PS: I didn't understand what this meant:

"or use --replaygain switch with EAC (trackgain only)"

...will this switch normalize tracks as they are being encoded?

As I understand the gapless issue is ultimately dependant on the player (hardware or software) . Mp3 isn't gapless by specs but can be using tricks with the lame header in the tag - foobar is compliant with this and so lame 3.90+ is gapless with foobar. Even though vorbis is natively gapless, I don't believe any h/w player has implemented gapless playback with any codec (rio karma ?)

Normalization is in eac alters audio permanently , possible destroying dynamics and should be avoided.

--replaygain is a flac commandline switch that will normalize volume at time of encoding.

BTW - eac keeps wavs by default so you can make those mp3's then encode the wavs to something like flac at your convenience. I wouldn't skip this unless you like to re-rip every year or so.

Is there a way to define seperate file paths for the two files? e.g:

MP3/Artist/Album/files
WAV/Artist/Album/files

Can the 'replaygain' switch be used with LAME? And is there only one setting?

If all this is possible could someone please show me the command line for it.

Thanks

I think I've heard the Rio Karma does gapless Vorbis. Vorbis portables that use a chip made by MCS Logic might be able to play Vorbis gaplessly. FreeMax of Korea released gapless Vorbis firmware once. Other companies that use the MCS Logic chip include Havin, Saisonic, and PocketBeat.

At this point I would be willing to PayPal someone some dollars to provide me with a solution to achieve what I outlined in the original post.

Mainly,

* Rip to MP3 specifying file paths and apply appropriate MP3Gain settings
* Use MAREO to encode to FLAC/MP3 simultaneously so that I have my files backed up in a lossless format for future codec advances.
* Burn FLACs to DVD media
* Have all files tagged properly
* Abililty to answer questions along the way

In EAC press F9, goto filename then:  \%A \%C \%N - %T

Yeah, I had that covered but it sends both the WAV and MP3 to the same folder.

I want to send them to separate folders...
