Good, basic audio editor?

Looking for a decent audio editor  (for Win XP) for basic (beginner) work and don't want to pay much (yet). What's available (and good) as freeware/inexpensive shareware?

Tried a search, but had a problem. Getting db errors.

Thanks,
Jim

Audacity is nice, try that one first and see if it fits your needs.

If you want something that's a little more powerful, give GoldWave a try. It has many features, and it can be extended with plugins, including DirectX/VST plugins.

It's not free, but quite affordable IMHO (around $40).

Audacity is quite nice, but I'd like to be able to to spectral/FFT analysis. So far I haven't been able to find that feature in Audacity. Did I overlook it? What about GoldWave? Is it up to it?

Thanks,
Jim

EAC's buillt-in audio editor has some basic spectral analysis features.

Audacity does a body good. Been looking for something like it for sometime now. Keyboard control (such as the arrow keys) for fine tuning selection position and range is especially nice. I'm not sure what someone would want that this prog doesn't have...

edit: There appears to be support for frequency analysis as shown in 6th pict down here...

...but I haven't found the function yet either

For a frequency analysis select a portion of the waveform (less than 23 seconds) and go to View -> Plot Spectrum. For a spectral analysis click on the little inverted black triangle to the left of the waveform where it says Stereo,44100hz etc and select Spectrum.

it is my opinion you are going to be happy with Magix Audio Clean lab. this one is perfect for novices.

it has a lot of features: noise reduction, equalizer, three bands compressor, echo/reverb effects, dc remove, directx, vst, and more.

you can find it at http://site.magix.net/index.php?id=411, cost $40.
