loudness war: download a free declipping tool

Some time ago, declipper was only available as a trial version (unless you pay for it).
Declipper is a DirectX-plugin that can be used with many common wav editors.

good: It has 'detailing' function to determine how sharp the added peak will be.
bad: Declips and normalizes down in one single process.
very bad: Needs at least 3 clipped samples with the same value to determine a clipped area.
But, after all, it's one of the better ones (that means, it doesn't decrease sound quality necessarily).
I know that I know nothing. But how can I then know that ?

Isn't that how (digital) clipping generally is defined?

Maybe, but a good declipping tool needs to recognize also single clipped samples and clipped areas with samples that don't have exactly the same value.

Weird- I was expecting that there would be more people who are interested in clip restauration.
I deeply apologize for just posting to bring this topic up among the recent threads.

Well any clipping restoration will just be guessing.  Guessing /= restoration IMO.  The only true clipping restoration would be for the album to be re-mastered with a lower volume.  Otherwise attempting to restore a clipped album is really futile.

it does help remove the ugly clipped buzzes of bass/kick drums, so de-clipping is not all that useless :)

aside from that you're right... declipping won't breathe dynamic range into your tracks or anything.

Thank you for this valuable tool.  Sometimes trying to improve a recording in this way is the only option.  Well...  second option.  I've been known to delete tracks that were really grating.  Anyway, this helps.  So, thank you!
