Can I convert AAC to MP3 on-the-fly?

Newbie here; not sure if I'm posting this in the correct forum . .

I'm considering ripping my CD collection to hit bitrate AAC which I will play through my home A/V sytems.  As I already have a portable MP3 player and I'd like to avoid maintaining two formats on my server, I'd like to know if there's a way to convert my AAC's to MP3 on-the-fly as I download them to my portable MP3 player.

TIA!

Is your portable mp3 player seen as an external hard drive by the OS? If so Foobar2000 or any other transcoding tool should be able to do it.

Yes, it - Creative MuVo2 - is seen as a drive.  Transcoding = format conversion?

Thanks for your assistance!
