BSSM had 3 or 4 nice songs back then when I was a teen  Cali has 2.
The old albums (pre 1991) are very boring, anything else not mentioned yet is filler.

That's funny.  I feel the opposite is true.  With the exception of "Mother's Milk," which totally blows.  The original line-up was the best.  When Slovak died and Irons left they should have changed the name.

Don´t know much about the Peppers but I really like By The Way. I have Californication too and I like it, but I think By The Way is better.

I like the new stuff more than the old stuff, probably Californication (released in 1999, i believe) is my favorite - although the geniuses who mixed it made it sound horrible.

"Blood Sugar Sex Magik".

"Freaky Styley" and "Mother's Milk" are both very good as well - but BSSM has so many classics on it.

For me, "One Hot Minute" and "Californication" weren't so good, but "By The Way" was a return to form.

One hot minute was their worst album.

I really like BSSM and the "uplift mofo party plan".

But Californication was really not that bad.

I liked Californication although way less than either Mother's Milk or BSSM. The single "By the Way" turned me off buying that album and I've yet to get any others either.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik in my opinon. Excellent and probably their best song writing. Their earlier stuff although not as popular was probably even better although I am not familiar with Freaky Styley, etc (definitely had Parliment and Funkadelics influence) H. Slovak was the heart soul of the Chilli Peppers don't forget this was the guy who taught Flea how to play Bass. Damn shame.  . One Hot Minute was that brief stint with Navarro on guitar. I don't think they have released one bad album in their career, although I would have to say this probably had the least appeal amongst the general consensus of folks.

Remember, Hillel and Irons weren't on the first record.  They were only on Freaky Styley and Uplift.

In terms of overall album quality, Californication is their best work. Around the World, Otherside, Californication, Porcelain, etc. Almost every song on the album is a good one, it has no real losers.

In terms of best songs, their best songs ever come from Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Give It Away, Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss, etc. A very different kind of sound that they don't have any more.

By The Way is not a great album. It has maybe 2 or 3 decent songs on it, at best. Kinda puts me to sleep.

I completely agree with Otto42, except I like also Mother's Milk!

My chart is:

1) Blood Sugar Sex Magik
2) Californication
3) Mother's Milk

...I'm not so familiar with the others because there were some serious fillers that don't interest me...

Edit: 1 typo...
Sorry for my poor English, I'm trying to get better... ;)

Porcelain? I´ll have to listen to that song again, but from what I remember, it was absolutely boring.
I agree with Around The World, Otherside (best song in the album IMHO), Californication.
IMHO By The Way has more than 2 or 3 good songs. At least 6 or 7 (By The Way, The Zephyr Song, Can´t Stop, Throw Away Your TV, On Mercury, Venice Queen)

Maybe I need to give Californication more of a listen.

I did have it on my minidisc for a while when it was out, but it kinda passed me by.  I don't remember it to be very interesting at all.

I can't believe that Freaky Styley and Mother's Milk are scoring so low!  Mother's Milk especially has some pure funk tunes that to me epitomise the Chilis (Subway to Venus, Higher Ground, Sexy Mexican Maid, etc.).  Yertle The Turtle on Freaky Styley deserves a special mention as well.  That tune is so funky.
