M-Audio Audiophile USB Problem

My audio server is a Gigabyte GA-7ZM motherboard, Athlon 900 chip, M-audio Audiophile USB and windows 2000.
I use winamp and the gapless audio output plug-in to play back my music, which is stored as .ape files.

For the couple of months I have had it, I have experienced strange lock-ups, usually after it has sat idle for several hours (it is on permanently), with the error message "Unable to initialize output device". The only way to get it working again is by restarting the machine.

So far I have made sure I am using the most recent motherboard and soundcard drivers, and I have turned off any power saving settings.

I can't seem to find any information relating to that error message, anybody here experienced this or have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Phill
