i know i know i should buy either a player or converter but for the sake of listening to 5 files i've been sent ....  does anyone know of a plugin, converter or player thats freeware

i've spent half an hour on google going round in friggin circles

Foobar2000 for example:

Winamp can also play ape files but you need a plugin, which is distributed with a Monkey's Audio compressor.

RadLight APE DirectShow Filter for playback in any DirectShow based player (RadLight, Windows Media Player ...)
