how to convert mod/s3m to wav/aac ?

foobar 2000 only convert to stereo.

how can i convert .mod or .s3m to other multichannel format (.wav or .aac or .ogg or .ac3 or .mp4 or .dts) ?

or do you know if there is a multichannel DirectShow Filter to play .mod and .s3m ?

Is there any point in converting it to multichannel even? I was under the impression that mod supports 2 channels at most.

Anyway, if you somehow manage to convert it to wav, you can feed this wav to any encoder supporting multichannel (Nero, Faac, Compaact!...)

2 channels .mod is very rare, most of them have 4 channels
some .s3m have more channels (6, 8, 12, 14, 16, 32, 64)

XM modules have even more channels, but it doesn't mean you need 32 speakers to play it  .
Voices (channels) are mixed together when you play the module to create a mono / stereo sounding.
Vital papers will demonstrate their vitality by spontaneously moving from where you left them to where you can't find them.

i have a 5.1 sound card and speakers
i don't want stereo and mono is shit

Sounds ...interesting. Unfortunately, I know of no module players or renderers which support such a thing.

Hmm, interesting signature, too. You might like this video I found where some people bought a Nintendo GameCube for the sole purpose of dragging it behind their truck for a mile along a dirt road. It was still functional afterward, so they took a sledgehammer to it. Several times. I don't agree, though.

Then, using your logic and knowledge of trackers, your hardware isn't adequate to play a lot of modules you will find.

Playing every channel of a .mod/.xm and mapping it to 5.1 might result in (for example) all the drums in the rear and the lead instrument in the left channel with some strings in the front... perhaps not what you want.

A solution is to use XMPlay to create a separate .wav for every channel, then use Cool Edit Pro or some other multitrack-mixer to create a "proper" 5.1 mix.

I'd recommend Modplug Tracker.  It can render to waves nicely.

If you want upmixing, I'd go with something real-time (like Pro Logic II).  You might want to get over your "i don't want stereo" phase though.  As nice as 5.1 can be, most stuff is stereo, and it's usually best to play it that way.

I fully agree with madah and also can recomend XMPlay. Modplug is quite obsolete
and it's rendering method is quite poor even if you used some DSP tweaks.

Panning exists as a continuum in modules, right? So, wouldn't it work, assuming panning is from -127..127, to map -127 to rear left, -64 to front left, 0 to centre, 64 to front right, 127 to rear right? Perhaps have some sort of intelligent remapping to ensure all channels are used or something?

Or am I completely barking up the wrong tree like usual?

Thanks !
i use Modplug Tracker with Surround, Reverb and Bass Expansion to output to 4 channels .WAV
then i edit the .WAV with Adobe Audition (Cool Edit Pro 2.1) to make it 6 channels
then i make it normal PCM 6 channels with Hypercube Transcoder so i can convert it to other formats (AAC/MP4/OGG)

i found a way that is at least 10 times faster

Well, my ideas are simple:
1) use XMPlay with surround on to render module to stereo wave file. Then feel free to use matrix (ambisonic?) filter to create 5.1 sound from it. Should sound OK. But this way you'll have to find Ambisonic VST plugins and Plugue Bidule to use it.
2) just record stereo track and use Dolby Prologic decoder.
3) The third way is the hardest and requires a lot of job to do. But result should be much better. Reorganize each MOD (better use XMs or ITs), so each track is on a standalone row. Render each each track to mono file. Mix them to whatever you want.
And don't use Modplug. Its render engine is a real crap, compared to XMPlay, which is crap, compared to Psycle
Choose whatever you want and don't forget, that anyway you'll have something different from original modules. Just note, that best results are only given with much effort.
I don't think, that mixing EACH MOD track is a good idea. just in many cases each MOD track contains different sets on instuments, which would sound weird in 5.1 (for example, at first piano is on the left, then behind you). Besides, MOD files (unlike XMs or ITs) usually have very poor stereo separation, which often makes listening them even in headphones annoying.

Well.. actually.. Psycle sampler is pretty bad (not for long, if we can get on schedule). What makes it better are the plugs and the VST's
