I think portable MP3 CD players are outdated .

Imagine that : 10 DVD-R mean 50 GB...
A portable MP3 DVD player could be a Ipod killer !

What are the manufacturers waiting for ?

I thought dvds could go up to 19.2Gb?

e.g.

4.8gb per layer
2 layers per side
2 sides per disk

= 4.8gb * 4 layers = 19.2Gb !!!

I doubt you'll ever see mp3-compatible  portable DVD players replace portable CD players. I think portable disc players altoge
ther will be outdated. A 40 GB iPod or an 80 GB Nomad Jukebox Zen is much smaller than a portable disc player with a sta
ck of 4 or 8 DVDs. Even using higher capacity DVDs, it's still smaller. Unfortunately, I don't think this dream will ever co
me true.

When this player will be released in about two years (as afaik there hasn't any player of this kind been announced yet) the storage space of 1,8" hard disks may surely have doubled to 80gigs. Then you'll have to transport 22 DVDs to obain the same quantity. And I'm sure that the hd-based players will be much more compact than portable DVD players, as DVD themselves represent a limit for reducing the size of a player.

A DVD is able to hold 4.7Gbits of data which means about 4.3GB. DVD burner can only burn one layer per side; therefor you'll reach 8.6GB at best. btw. Do you really want a disk you cannot write anything on because both sides hold data (and it's somehow more sensitive to fingerprints..)?

Yep, but DVD-R and DVD+R only go up to 4.7GB (4.38GB in reality), dual layer/dual sided disks won't be much use for your own personal music collection, they would have to be professionally produced!!

@rpop, I'm sure many people do think portable disk players have seen a death but i believe they will be around for ages. For portable players, i think there is nothing better than solid state players, their only downside being size and cost.
Having had one HDD just stop working, and another go up in smoke and burn my PSU out, im not a big fan of them, and that doen't even cover cooruption and bad clusters! If you look into the technical spec of how they work, eg. How close the head travels next to the platters, the rotation speed etc. I personally would NEVER wander around with a HDD player. But i WOULD love someone to convince me how it could be reliable, and last a long period of time, as that is the only thing holding me off from an IPod!!

Large storage optical drives in my mind are the happy medium, no physical contact between the medium and the reader, but large enough capacity (if poratable DVD reader capable devices were released) that the storage size issue becomes a mute point.

Roll on DVD portable players, i say!!!!

Of course, just my opinion,

Kristian

There are already some portable DVD players that play mp3s off of DVDs.  Check this thread here:

I still haven't been able to test other DVD formats except for DVD+RW on that Panasonic player (it didn't work), but DVD+R or DVD-R might work with it.  If so, it would be perfect as long as it had ok battery life.  With the screen closed, the music still plays and it turns the screen off, so there is a possibility of good battery life...and it isn't any bigger than 1st generation portable cd players (with the screen closed), so it would be manageable.  I will have to get back over to a Circuit City and test it again now that I have a DVD burner.
WARNING:  Changing of advanced parameters might degrade sound quality.  Modify them only if you are expirienced in audio compression!

I have to admit, I've had my share of hard drive problems too; every single hard drive I've had (except the one I bought a month ago) has died on me. However, these problems have been limited to 3.5" hard drives so far, and all the portables I've owned (which use 2.5" and 1.8" drives) haven't given me any hard drive problems.

I still think, however, that mp3-compatible portable DVD players won't become widespread anytime soon. I haven't even seen mp3-compatible portable CD players catch on too much. I think this mainly has to do with ease-of-use. It's very easy for the average, non-technical minded/computer-savvy Joe to buy a CD, stick it in his CD player and play it. It's much more difficult for him to rip it, encode it and write it on a CD. By contrast, innovative sites like the iTunes music store are making it much easier for him to get decently encoded music (by their standards) on their iPod with just a few clicks. Until it becomes this easy to make mp3 CDs, or until such CDs start going on sale (), I don't think your idea will have much success. Of course, this is only my opinion.

If the player is the smaller type for 8cm DVD-1 (1.36gig), I think it would be interesting.

The real future for portable lies in MRAM, but until that comes, i guess the mixture of small Flash, big HDs and cheap cd-r/dvd-r will remain.
