How To Get Into Composing (MIDI Instruments & PC)

Hi guys ...

a little off-topic (I know) but does anyone know a good web resource for beginners that covers something like "getting started with MIDI & PC" ?

Any hints would be higly appreciated ...

Thanks in advance ...
The name was Plex The Ripper, not Jack The Ripper

For starters Anvil Studio is a decent bit of freeware for using MIDI.  And if you check out the Links page there, there are a bunch of resources related to MIDI.

Another site for MIDI files (so you can see how they've done it) not mentioned there is Music Robot.

first thing you're gonna need is a sequencer, if you want to shell out, there's cubase, logic (now mac only), fruity loops, or, a great starter, reason, with the others, you're gonna need virtual synths, samplers, samples etc, all costs a few quid, but reason does the lot for about £200-250
if you just want to re work midi files, try the roland virtual soundcanvas 55, which plays back midi files, and you can assign new instruments to the parts and various other tweaks
there's a site called the cubase ring, or something, and that's got plenty of forums about all aspects of pc music production, hope some of this helps
