Hooking up Tascam DR-07XP

Hello,
I have a Yamaha A-S301 Amplifier. I have my cassette tape player hooked into that. I recently bought a Tascam DR-7XP portable digital recorder and tried going from my Yamaha to the Tascam but the sound is distorted. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thank you.
Randy

I imagine about the only thing which could be wrong is if your amp's line out is overloading the recorder's input.
It's your privilege to disagree, but that doesn't make you right and me wrong.

It looks like the Tascam's inputs are microphone inputs.   A line-level signal is about 100 times stronger than a microphone signal.

But 32-bits gives it quite a bit of range so you should be "close".

I assume you connected "Record Out" from the amplifier.    You can try a different adapter cable adapter with the headphone output.   Headphone voltage is about the same as line-level except there is always a volume control so it can be turned-down.   (The headphone output is capable of driving the lower impedance of headphones.)

You can also try connecting directly to the tape player.  The output may be lower and/or it may have a volume control.

Is is designed to handle line-level: https://tascam.com/us/product/dr-07xp says the input is
"Stereo mini jack for external stereo microphones (provides plug-in power) / External line input"

Edit: checked, the Yamaha's REC OUT is the consumer-level 200 mV, so ... nothing outrageous. Should work well?

"32-bit float" is only one of the recording format option.  It doesn't seem very likely that the ADCs are better than 24-bit fixed, and the matching will depend on the input FS voltage of the ADC.

Drilling down to the specs, it says:

Quote
Nominal input level   - 20 dBV
Maximum input level   -4 dBV

...so "-4dBV" looks like the critical parameter, which is what – a few hundred millivolts RMS?  Looks like it should be OK then (with the observation that "RMS" is not a good way to specify the peak input voltage of an ADC).

If the OP has read the manual and is operating the recorder in accordance with the instructions but the results are not up to expectation, this sounds like a reason to reject the recorder.  It might be faulty.
