Splitting mkv container

The title is pretty much self explanatory

(I always wanted to say that )

Is it possible to split an mkv file containing DivX and aac so it can be copied onto 2 CDs?

I haven't really used mkv much but I don't see why you couldn't do this with virtualdubmod, it may take a bit of screwing around though and might depend on how easy it is to split the AAC stream.

Hi,

I haven't tried it myself, but there's tools available here:

http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolni...32/pre/mkvtooln

You also need these libs:

http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolni...2/mkvtoolnix-ru

Here's the docs:

http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/

Sample files here:

And of course doom9 would be the place for more info:

Good luck,

JEN,

are you after the video or the audio stream ?

For video, its easy, any of the tools mentioned above will give you your video as a separate AVI, or even OGM if you like. The most easiest to use is certainly VirtualdubMod, simply open the MKV file, set 'video' to 'DirectStreamCopy' and then 'save as' either .AVI, .OGM or .MKV ( video only ). If you make an AVI from it, and if the video contains no b-frames, you may use MP4UI to make a valid MP4 file from the AVI.

For audio, there is actually one big problem about this :

None of the tools above would restore the AAC headers of the audio track if you demux it, so what you get is a raw AAC stream, unusable by any other application. The only way currently is to use Graphedit , render the MKV file, delete all filters after the matroska splitter filter, insert 3IVX MP4 muxing filter, connect it to the audio pin of the MKV and insert a so called filewriter filter after the MP4 muxer, so you get a MP4 file with the AAC audio inside.

Not easy, but certainly doable, if you need more help like a scrennshot of how such a graph would be looking like, gimme a shout. For Graphedit, you can get it from Doom9.org from the download section ....

Would it (in any way or form) make it easier if I split the original avi and aac files before muxing them into the mkv container?

Jese, i'm so stupid  .... /me hides ....

I thought you want to extract the audio or video streams from the MKV .....

Splitting MKV files with AAC audio is quite easy with mkvmerge from CLI, but much much easier in the next version VirtualdubMod which will be released tomorrow  ..... i'll post a short Guide here if you remind me about it, it will be avilable from this link here : http://sf.net/projects/virtualdubmod .....

Nope, I have a 1390Mb mkv file which contains a DivX5.0.3 video file and a PsyTEL 2.15 aac audio file.  I want to be able to get this file onto CD.  The CDs I have are the 700Mb type.  So I wanted to know how to divide the mkv file into 2 files, so they can be copied to CD.

Thanks, I didn't realise the "split" function in mkvmerge.  I think I will try that out first as it has that handy "size" function.  If I have understood that help file correctly, I should be able to specify the size of the first split (e.g. 695Mb) and mkvmerge should split it at that point!

I will let you know if it works out .

Thanks for all the help!

Tomorrow is today!  How about that guide

I tried out the split function in mkvmerge but it left the second file unplayable?

I retried it 3 times, but the 2 file will not play? "It gives no error messages"

I guide I will have to wait for the guide!
