Skipping during playback

Hi there,

Recently completely out of the blue, Foobar has started to skip / stutter when I listen to music.  At first it was at the start of a track, but now it is at any point during playback as well.  I did a search and found this - problems with foobar skipping   I have tried what was suggested, but it hasn't worked.  Can anyone please help?

For info, I have changed the buffering settings.  I changed buffering to 250, 1000, 1500 and 2000.  It has made no difference at all.  At the moment it is at 1000.  See below -

I have also set the priority to High in Task Manager.  See below -

My CPU runs between 3 - 7%.  I have 4GB RAM, of which 2.5 is in use.  1.4 is free.  I would hope this is not a problem because it hasn't been a problem until now.

I would appreciate any advice and suggestions.

Many thanks.

Hi there,

The "buffering" under Advanced is a separate setting. Try setting buffering under Playback > Output > Buffer Length. Maybe try around 10000 ms (= 10 seconds).

The setting under Advanced > Playback > Buffering > Full file buffering, is used to load up to a certain filesize in memory to save on hard disk access per track. As it says this is measured in kB, so 1000 = 1MB, which is not much. Seeing most lossless tracks are upwards of 20MB, it would be better setting this to around 100000 kB (= 100MB).

As for why it started skipping in the first place, that might be something else entirely. Not sure without more info on your config (what OS, HDD, sound hardware, what drivers are you using under Playback > Output > Output Device?)

Cheers 8)

Thank you so much for your reply.  Setting buffering under Playback seems to have done the trick.  It is no longer skipping (for now).

For info:
OS: Windows 10
HDD: 466 GB Acer.  However, my music sits on a 2 TB external drive.
Sound Hardware: Realtek High Definition Audio
Drivers: Primary Sound Driver is selected, but another option is Realtek High Definition Audio.
