Transcode Warning: Convert FLAC to Apple ACC ( m4a ) format

Hi everybody!  Yeah, this is a real puzzler, upgraded from Foobar2000 v1.3.15 to v1.3.16 with the free encoder pack 2017-06-07 on Windows 10.  Never seen this warning before.  The warning states:

"You are about to transcode from on lossy format to another.  This will degrade the quality of the transcoded files further compared to the source.. Are you sure Yes or No."

I am glad this warning was introduced into the program as sometimes I do forget but I am converting a FLAC format which is losseless to a lossy (m4a).

I don't know if the advisory is faulty and there is NOT going to be a direct conversion from FLAC to m4a without a intermediary conversion process that would degrade.  So this is a heads up.  Thank you!  :)

Tried to convert FLAC to AAC, got no warnings. fb2k 1.3.16.

I don't get any warnings either on an identical setup.

The warning itself, as written, is a bit confusing. But is "from on lossy" your typo, or an accurate transcription? And anyway, clearly it should say "transcode to a lossy format" or "transcode from a lossless to a lossy format."
That's so plausible, I can't believe it.

I take it to mean "You are about to transcode from one lossy format to another." Which is not a very good idea.

Make sure that all of the tracks you have selected are indeed "lossless". Maybe you let a "lossy" file slip into your batch?

Thank you for that advice kode54!

I was scratching my head with this issue and knuckled down.  Some files I have, I had to tag manually.  In some batch runs I did, I have inadvertently goofed, changed the file extension from m4a to FLAC.  I goofed in an automation script using ffmpeg, and a script mistyped can do a lot of damage very quick but also easily repaired.   Yep, I am getting mentally challenged in my older years. How did I find this discrepancy?  A program called media info.  I am truly sorry forum members, I must be more systematic & investigative.  Thank you for your diligent troubleshooting, feedback and help.

In a perfect world though, if a file has the wrong extension, should foobar2000 tell you about it?

foobar2000 doesn't accept files with wrong extension at all. If the extension showed .flac for an AAC file it must have been .flac.m4a or similar in reality. This can unfortunately easily happen as Windows hides extensions by default.
