Bonkenc Version 1.0 Beta 1!

I just released a new version of the BonkEnc Audio Encoder! Version 1.0 Beta 1 adds the following new features:

- Support for Winamp 2 plug-ins. Input and Output plug-ins are supported.
- Improved CDDB querying (can now be aborted if server is unreachable).
- Fixed BonkEnc lagging when running for a longer time.
- Improved ASPI driver detection (Nero ASPI DLL is used if available).
- Invalid characters in filenames are now replaced.
- Title information can now be extracted from the filename.
- Added official support for Windows 95.
- Fixed some of the restrictions on input audio formats.
- Fixed many bugs and memory leaks.
- Many smaller improvements.

GUI is wonderful but functions are useless. There are CDex, EAC, Razorlame and OggDropXPd which are better. Lossless capabilities of BoncEnc algo are poor ...
Sorry ...

For me the EXE installer did not work, after the progress bar it just gave me a blank screen with Next and Cancel buttons, and Next didn't do anything.

Moving along to the ZIP install...

When setting the output directory the browse button also was not working for me. There were a few times it crashed when I took the focus off it when the options screen was open (invalid page fault), so maybe some Smooth lib doesn't like my Win98SE much.

I was disappointed that lossless mode was not enabled by default. I keep thinking Bonk is mainly a lossless encoder. If I didn't know better to check the options I might have accidentally used the default 2:1 mode.

Speed of Bonk about the same as a heavy lossless encoder and file reduction was medium (lossless mode, JS, default predictor level 32). Unchecking JS resulted in only a tiny bit bigger file size for the music I test it with. The predictor setting might be interesting to experiment with.

Hope this was useful info.

Installed the zipped setup on my Win98se system, but when browsing thru the menus and options, it froze and generated an Windows error("illegal instruction...").
The app has a good interface, but lacks stability.

Ok, I think there are some stability issues on Win9x systems. Thought I had fixed most of them in this release, but some may have slipped through. I will try to fix that in the next release. After all, finding such issues is what betas are meant for...

Thank's for your replies. It showed me where I have to do more work 'till the release.
