AC3 files

Hi,

I have some .ac3 files that I want to have in my library. I downloaded the ac3 decoder and the songs play just fine, but they won't show up in my library. I use an autoplaylist in my simplaylist viewer to view my library. Any ideas?

perhaps they are not tagged properly - that's if ac3 files can be tagged?? right click one (or more) ac3 files in a playlist>properties.

if they aren't tagged properly, they will probably be bunched under ? in your Library viewer of choice.

edit: if you're using an autoplaylist query like ALL then tags shouldn't matter and they should appear in your playlist. the only thing to do is double check the folder path really is monitored and you haven't excluded ac3 files in the Media library options.

You're right! I just didn't notice them because they weren't tagged! Thanks. They can be tagged but I don't think it's very standard to do so.

The only reliable way I found to tag AC3 files was wrapping them into MKV.
It's only audiophile if it's inconvenient.

With Foobar 1.3.2 and foo_ac3 0.9.7 I can tag AC-3 files with APEv2. There isn't an option anywhere to explicitly disable this, unlike for DTS in advanced settings. APEv2 supports everything needed out of a tag: unicode, long fields. Most other software can just ignore the tag as corruption/extra data, or, if not, the tag can be removed if you want to mux your AC-3 with video. A tagged AC3 has wider support than AC3-in-Matroska. And last time I looked into it, Matroska tags didn't exactly map 1:1 to normal music formats (vorbis comment, apev2).

For some reason the ac3 plugin refuses to insert a cover art into an AC3 file. That is not an issue for me personally. I just found it to be an artifically imposed limitation. The same file renamed to mp3 can hold a front cover art inside apev2.
