HD Movie (5.1/7.1 CH) on Virtual Surround Headphones

Ok so, my question is for those who know the difference between Headsets. 1) Virtual Surround headsets (That emulate a STEREO sound to make it sound like it has many channels, e.g 5.1/7.1) a good example of such a headset is Logitech's G35s and 2) Headsets that do not emulate surround sound, but in fact have that many sources (multiple speakers) to support these channels.

My question: if I watch an HD movie which has an audio with multiple channels (5.1/7.1), will my "virtual surround" headphones benefit from those channels at all (with virtual surround enabled)? or will they still be emulating it with just 2 (stereo) channels from that audio file?

The problem with either scheme is that one of the ways we locate a sound source is by moving our heads (sometimes only slightly) to get a "2nd reading" and triangulate.    With headphones, of course the sound-source moves too.

I've never heard Head Tracking Headphones, but I assume that's the best solution when you have a true surround-sound source.

I've never heard headphones with multiple drivers either.    It might work for some listeners, but it's never made any sense to me.

Some people get good results with Dolby Headphone.  I have tried it (it's included with WinDVD) but I don't get any sense of sound coming from behind me.  I tried it with a 5.1 Channel test-DVD, and I dont remember if I tried it with regular stereo.  It does "something", but for me it doesn't create surround sound.  But,  I don't get a good "soundstage" illusion to when listening to regular stereo on headphones either... )

I use Dolby Headphone frequently, and damn if it's not a shame it or something similar has not gained more ground, especially on mobile. I have had to buy the Asus U1 and U3 USB soundcards in order to get it, and I have the JVC SU-DH1 adapter. Hopefully Dolby Atmos, which has a mode that evolves the concept of DH, gains a foothold in mobile. I read it's going to be a feature of Snapdragon 810 chips.

I haven't tried these, but they don't inspire any confidence at all. I think DH and stuff like it (DTS Surround Sensation for instance) is the next best thing to binaural recordings.

What are you using? The G35?
