Can't burn with EAC

Hello everybody,

I'm kinda desperate as after searching for similar problems and trying every possible suggestions I found on the net I still can't solve my problem. Let me explain the situation.

Both my CD/DVD drives installed on my desktop PC (Windows XP) seem to be broken as whenever I try to burn an audio CD all I hear is an incredible noise so, after ruining several CD's I gave up.
Since I also have a laptop with Windows 7, I decided to use its drive for the first time as I never burned any CD with it and here my problems began...

First of all I must say that I followed the step-up guide for installing EAC here.

If I chose to check option "Use CDRDAO for writing in the EAC layout editor" the program starts and freezes in "Writing the lead-in". None of the suggestions given here helped as even ImgBurn doesn't work (it fails with "ACM Not Possible" and I also can't fix this).

If I chose to leave blank the above option, then I have a different behavior as when I try to burn a CD it starts with "Calibrating write Power", steps to "Writing Lead-In" and this error message pops up:

Write error !

Write blocks :

Logical unit not ready, long write in progress

In both cases (with and without option "Use CDRDAO") my drive hangs permanently and the only way to be able to remove the CD is by shutting down the PC.

If I replace 'cygwin1.dll' under folder "C:\Program files\Exact Audio Copy\CDRDAO" with a more recent one I found (version 1.7.25) then EAC doesn't recognize CDRDAO and the option for selecting it is disabled. I also tried to find a more recent CDRDAO.exe but couldn't find it.

My laptop drive is a PLDS DVD DS-8A8SH and these suggestions found here also didn't help.

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

This is because you are burning a data CD instead of an audio CD. What software were you using?

I've always used data CDs without any problems.

I discovered that my drives are not broken after all. The problem is when I load the files in EAC they already sound corrupted. The strangest thing is that in Foobar the very same files are just fine. So I gave up using EAC and burned with Foobar instead. It has even the advantage that it was not necessary to convert from FLAC to WAV as the whole process is fully automatic! So the is no messing with conversions nor cuesheets, something that is particularly difficult to handle in EAC.

I trust that you weren't trying to burn or listen to FLACs using EAC.  It can only burn or play WAVs, mp3s, and APEs (IIRC, no longer use it).  Foobar2000 burns practically anything using its Burninate plugin.

I've never used EAC for burning, I've only used it for ripping.  For the last few years, I've been using ImgBurn for burning CDs & DVDs.  If foobar2000 is working for you, that's fine too.

We are not talking about the blank CDs, we are talking about the format.    You can burn WAV, FLAC, or MP3 files directly as-is from your hard drive and this is considered a "data disc".    Most "regular" CD players won't play a data disc, but your computer can read & play the files just like from a hard drive.

Regular audio CDs are a special format.*    ...That's why you have to "rip" the audio from a CD and you can't just copy the files to your hard drive.

If you configure your burning software to make an audio CD, it will convert your files to the special audio CD format and you'll get an audio CD that will play on any CD player.

If you configure your burning software to make a data CD and you feed-it MP3 files (for example), the data CD will contain exact copies of the MP3 files, just as-if you had copied the files to another hard drive.

*  Audio CDs use the same underlying PCM format as (16-bit, 44.1kHz, stereo) WAV files, but the WAV files are in a different "package".

You can't even open FLAC files in EAC. Somehow these wav files were corrupted when loaded in EAC although like I wrote they were just fine in Foobar. Go figure...
