Plextor, Plextor or Plextor.

There simply is no alternative.

this question was asked at the EAC phorum about a month ago... the creator of EAC recommended the 24X PLEXTOR CDRW DRIVE [at that time...is it 32x yet?] as the best all around drive for DAE secure copies and BURNING.

but i would agree that almost any plextor drive will out perform any others, cdrw or cd-rom...even DESPITE the fact that some CACHE.  THAT is pretty impressive...

whatever you do...don't get a Samsung 212 cause it sucks ass...this 12x burner doesn't even extract digital audio CORRECTLY let alone at any nice speed...hence the need for a new one...

i have heard good reviews of the LITEON 163 or 165 DVD drives, but others have REPORTED difficulties with ALL LITEON DRIVES...so who knows??? [ the 165 reportedly can read DVDRAM discs]

PLEXTOR PLEXTOR PLEXTOR PLEXTOR PLEXTOR PLEXTOR PLEXTOR PLEXTOR

hopefully you get a drive with a firmware that doesn't cache...check out satcp's tutorial page to find out what firmware to use.

I can only second the Plextor comments. They cost a little more than the reast, but from my experience they are a "no shit" solution if you pardon the expression. Appart from their superb dae capabilities (iirc the latest drives were ripping audio at unbelievable 32x!), they are very hassle free. Feed them just about any cd-r: they will burn them. I never had any trouble with a specific brand of cd-r. Plextor drives just work and never cause trouble!

... according to the C'T 20 /01 (german computer mag) the TEAC 24x Model has better audio rip speed plus BETTER and FASTER error correction than the Plextor 24x Model.
I would definitly go for the TEAC 24x since it realy proved better than Plextor in each of numerous tests they made.
It also supports all CloneCD Modes including Correct EFM encoding of regular bit patterns.
C'T  is one of the most seriously capable computer magazines out there.
I don't know if TEAC is as famous/available in the USA as over here in Germany, but if you can get your hands on a TEAC 24x you got the superior CD writer !

just wanted to put in my vote for plextor also, aside from exceptional quality drives they also have great support if you should have any problems.  i was having some problems w/ my 8/4/32A about 6 months after purchasing it and they sent me a brand new one no questions asked, no hassels, nothing.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input here. I too am getting a new drive and a Plextor one at that (thanks to all of you). Plus, it's rare you'll find near-unanimous agreement from a bunch of audiophiles

Oddly, my PX-716A DVD drive has had some trouble burning CD-Rs... it could very well be the media, but at times CDs will start skipping shortly after out of the burner, or a couple months after being burned.  I should try burning the CD-Rs in my brother's drive to test, but I haven't...

Although recently I noticed that my firmware and PlexTools were a couple years out of date... so hopefully the write quality will improve.

Read quality has always been good, and although it won't rip the 24x or whatever others have been saying in Exact Audio Copy (I disable hardware C2 detection, because of hearing that it can be faulty even in Plextor drives) it does rip faster than other drives I've had.  And it seems to have the intelligence to rip certain media at faster or slower speeds (this isn't the EAC slowdown on read error option, it happens immediately before encountering any errors).

While I'm sure everyone appreciates your thanks, couldn't you have waited until the 5 year anniversary to resurrect this thread?  That would have been truly spectacular.  Being about a month early is such a disappointment.
