Want a better sound system than the GigaWorks s750 !

The M-Audio BX5 D2s are nearfield monitors. They're very directional and work well about 1 metre away, a la:

There's no way you'd want these for a general listening setup.

This is why a number of us recommend Audioengine- their speakers are meant for general listening. They are not near field studio monitors. Plus I find the build quality better than the M-Audio's. The volume knob on my AV-40 became scratchy after a year.

I never heard the M-Audio or seen measurements, but the following nearfield monitors I tried at home, worked really well above 1,5m for general listening.

Behringer B2031A, JBL LSR2325P, JBL LSR305, Nubert Nupro A-200

These speakers have a wide sweetspot and sound still good, even when they are not directly aimed at you, due to their smooth off axis response.

My two cents, and pardon me if this was mentioned, but personally, I'd recommend listening to as many different speakers as possible before you purchase any. I, myself, take along a sampler of my most favorite songs and I listen for long enough to develop listener fatigue, if there is any. I've found that after a few songs, speakers I'm going to like still sounded great and I wanted to keep listening. I then narrow it down to a few and then spend some time comparing them directly to each other whenever possible. It sucks when you aren't able to do quick swapping as I find it's impossible to really compare speakers otherwise. I find that there are subtle audible differences and I tend to prefer one speaker over another. Usually, but not nearly always, more expensive gear does better. In my experience, speakers are an extremely individual thing. Some people swear by speakers that others simply cannot abide. There's really no accounting for taste.

However, a friend of mine says buy the most expensive speakers you can't really afford and learn to like the sound .... isn't philosophy wonderful. ;~)
