ASPI upgrade and CD writers

i have a dilemma which i'm hoping people here can help me with

i recently formated my laptop and now i reinstalled everything, including my CD writer drivers

the CD package with my CD writer has the basic version of adaptec easy CD creator 3.5

now, i'm having problems with some applications on my system, such as EAC. while it does work with my drive, sometimes the drive will "lag". i haven't tried to burn a CD yet. anyway, i believe this is an ASPI layer issue. according to adaptec's ASPI checking program, my ASPI installation is old and not configured properly. here is the program log file:

my o/s is windows 98se. when i try to upgrade to ASPI 4.60, the setup program tells me that no qualified adaptec products have been found on my system and the installation cannot continue

i believe that to solve this problem, i need to install adaptec easy CD creator, and then update the ASPI drivers. the thing is i don't want to install adaptec easy CD creator. it's a piece of crap and i don't need it. it created a lot of problems on my previous installation, but i feel that without the proper ASPI installation i'm gonna have many problems ripping and burning CDs

i really need help sorting this out. what should i do?

forceaspi if you want ASPI. (Remark: AFAIK this program is rather old and therefore will install an ASPI 4.6x version, whereas the latest ASPI is 4.7x)
Maybe someone knows a more recent similar program?

VOB ASAPI might be a good alternative (to be preferred over ASPI if you use EAC). If you chose this one, be sure to check the option in EAC (EAC > interface > external aspi from VOB)

Use 4.6!
It has a lot of less issues than 4.71

thanks
i downloaded forceaspi and so far so good. i'll stay with version 4.60 for now (i had 4.57 before)

the performance of EAC (0.9 beta 4) seems a bit strange. the speed is slightly slower in secure mode, even though the CD is in perfect condition. i remember ripping the same CDs with an earlier version of EAC (0.9 beta 3) and that process was a bit faster. is the slight speed reduction done intentionally by EAC?

Adaptec Aspi 4.60.1019 can be installed on every system, then you can upgrade to the latest layer. Get it here
ASPI 4.60.1021 update can be found here
BTW, I have a w98se box also (LG CDRW 12x/EAC) and the later ASPI 4.7x doesnt work on it.!
