Adaptec ASPI driver version 4.70

Adaptec has released ASPI driver version 4.70:

At this time Adaptec is allowing the download of this file without regard to ownership of retail Adaptec Products.

This ASPI layer is available via a licensing agreement to any company who wishes to distribute it with their product.

If you are the owner of a 3rd party device that requires an ASPI layer to be installed in your operating system, Adaptec suggests that you contact your peripheral manufacturer for a product specific version of the ASPI layer. The version you are about to download is a generic version and not designed to work with every device.

Adaptec provides this software without charge and as a courtesy to Adaptec product users but offers no technical support regarding this software.

You can download the driver here.

So no more ForceASPI needed?

Sorry for being stupid, but what exactly does this "aspi layer" do? From what I understand it is related to the access of cd-rom drives. Is it needed (and does the one I might be using come with the OS), or can I be just fine without any form of ASPI? What would be the benefit of using the Adaptec driver?

ASPI is standardized API for accessing SCSI devices. You don't need it if you don't use programs related to low level cd access, like burning programs or rippers. Actually nowadays many program has it's own ASPI drivers, but I prefer using Adaptec's. Windows 9x is bundled with old Adaptec's ASPI, but later NT based systems are not. Some programs can use NT's native interface for CD access, so ASPI may not be necessary.

I don't know exact differences with different ASPI implementations, but I have always get best ripping results using Adaptec.

Works fine here with EAC (W2K, SCSI Plex, IDE TDK)

Works fine here too, with Win2K, SCSI Plextor, Teac W524 ATAPI. Maybe having a SCSI card helps.

No problemo.

Does anyone have this working on an IDE only system?

I just did a clean install of W2K (Service Pack 2) and the new Adaptec drivers. I then installed the new EAC and blam!, nothing, even though ASPI Check tells me I am up and running fine.

EAC can see the CD-Rom drives via the Native NT Interface, so I know it is an ASPI problem.

Thanks.

My system is IDE only, and I was going to install the 4.7 ASPI drivers but if they mess up EAC then I'll wait for a fix.

The ASPI layer V. 4.60 works fine for me.

Is there any special reason that I should consider for upgrading?

It is kind of weird here.  It broke CDex but made EAC work faster.  Instead of ripping at 2X I can rip at around 7X now.  I am happy.

OK, I still don't understand how the adaptec drivers are better then the ones provided by my system. Some info: Win2k SP2, Teac IDE cd-rom, Plextor IDE cd-writer. No SCSI here. I'm ripping with the Plextor and EAC which gives me rel. fast and error-free rips. I'm happy the way it is, but of course allways seeking improvement. With all this: Adaptec-blew-up-my-EAC going on I'm somewhat reluctant to try them out. (Never touch a running system  )

Would the Adaptec drivers do any good? As in: faster ripping speed without errors?

No. If your programs work you don't need them.

Well, I was hoping that the newer version would work because:

1. It is legal. (unlike Win98se, W2K doesn't have it built-in)
2. Being a later version, might have less bugs.

ASPI is standardized API for accessing SCSI devices.

Just a note:

Originally it was devised for use with SCSI CD-ROMs, but it often works well with IDE CD-ROMs (using a command set known as ATAPI).
